Hi, Tanner! I am planning to buy a film camera but I have no idea which is better, a 35mm or a 120 format. Any thoughts?

P.S. Can I just say, you and your wife are awesome.

Hey Gette,

I personally prefer 35mm simply because the only 120mm cameras I have ever used have been “toy” cameras like Holgas and Dianas. While those cameras are awesome for creating really dreamy images with nifty lens flare and so on, I personally prefer shooting with cameras that let me control things such as shutter speed and aperture, and thus I love my 35mm Nikon FM10 and Olympus XA.

If it’s more for carrying around 35mm might simply be a better idea because 120 cameras are typically a bit more bulky. Another thing that I like about 35mm is that I don’t have to change my film as much, which can be a hassle sometimes. So I guess my sensibility says 35, but that’s coming from a guy who has never used a “real” 120mm camera, so I might not be the best person to ask.

Oh, and thanks so much for the compliment. My wife is pretty awesome, I’ll give you that, but I’m awesome only about ten percent of the time.
